Armação de Pera, Algarve - Resort Guide

A popular destination among the Portuguese and foreign holidaymakers in the summer, Armação de Pera is a blend of traditional fishing village with a modern high rise resort. Armação de Pera offers all the conveniences of a holiday resort, with ample options in terms of shops, supermarkets, restaurants and bars, not to mention its beautiful sandy beach, one of the longest in the Algarve, stretching as far as Galé beach on its eastern side.

The name Armação de Pera derives from the fact that the fishermen from the inland village of Pera used to prepare the armação (fishing equipment and nets) at this beach. The long standing fishing traditions of Armação de Pera, are still visible to the east of the beach where the brightly-coloured fishing boats and huts where the fishing equipment is stored, are located. A promenade runs along the beach by the sea with landscaped areas, and many outdoor cafés and restaurants where you can enjoy the warm Algarvian sun, and sample the local specialities including freshly caught fish and shellfish dishes.

A short drive inland will take you to the charming village of Guia, popular for its chicken piri-piri restaurants, and the Algarve Shopping, a modern shopping centre with an excellent range of shops, cafés and restaurants. You can also enjoy the dolphins, seals and sea lion shows at the nearby Zoomarine ocean park.

For golf lovers, Salgados is the nearest golf course, but within a 10-35 minutes drive, you will find some of the best golf courses in Europe, located in Vilamoura to the East, and in Alcantarilha to the West.
