Vilamoura, Algarve - Resort Guide

Stylish and cosmopolitan, Vilamoura is the largest purpose built tourist complex in Europe, located in central Algarve, only 25 minutes drive from Faro airport. The resort offers a fantastic range of sports and leisure facilities, including five golf courses, a casino, extensive landscaped areas with pathways for walking or cycling, golden beaches and a wide range of watersports.

At the heart of Vilamoura, surrounded by large hotels and luxury holiday homes, shops, restaurants and vibrant bars, you will find an impressive marina suitable for over 1,000 vessels. This is certainly a great place to hang out and relax over a cool drink whilst enjoying the many stunning yachts. From here, it is also possible to charter boats for big game fishing, go on boat trips to discover the nearby caves, and enjoy many water sports such as jet skiing or parasailing.

Vilamoura offers a huge range of cafés, bars and restaurants, fashionable boutiques and shops, as well as a casino and trendy clubs, with many of them dotted around the marina, where national and international celebrities can be spotted in the summer months.

If you just want to comfortably travel around the resort, there is a 'tourist train' running about every 30 minutes.

Vilamoura was originally a Roman fishing town, and the ruins include baths in which the mariners used to bathe. If you are an avid historian the Roman site and museum are worth a visit.

For anyone who simply likes to go to the beach to relax, Vilamoura boasts two beautiful beaches, Praia da Marina to the east of the marina, and Praia da Falésia to the west. The resort is also home to Vilamoura Casino, which has regular evening entertainment, such as shows and events, as well as the gaming rooms.

With five 18-hole courses, Vilamoura is regarded as one of the finest golfing destinations in Europe, mostly created by internationally acclaimed golf course designers. Vilamoura has become an elite golf venue, attracting the top professional golfers who come to play the prestigious European Tour Portugal Masters, held at Oceânico Victoria in October each year.

For a day out, head to Loulé, only 20 minutes drive away, on Saturday morning for the gypsy market, visit the lovingly renovated market hall, or discover its medieval castle and walk around the ancient cobbled streets, lined with traditional whitewashed houses.
