Albufeira, Algarve - Resort Guide

Over the years Albufeira has grown to become one of the most desired holiday destinations in Europe, well known for its stunning beaches, and its exciting nightlife, whilst managing to retain the old-world charm of an Algarvian fishing village.

The “old town” in Albufeira, with the traditional whitewashed houses, narrow cobbled streets lined with restaurants, bars, cafés and shops, offers an interesting contrast to its modern marina. Located in the western outskirts of the town, Albufeira’s colourful marina, designed by a famous Portuguese architect, is the starting point for many of the most popular things to do in Albufeira, such as boat trips, fishing trips, diving excursions as well as thrilling parasailing rides.

If you are staying in Albufeira, you can easily get around without a hired car, as most amenities are within a short walk and the taxi fares are affordable. There are plenty of other transportation options such as the 'tourist train' that runs between the 'Strip' in Praia da Oura and Albufeira 'old town', and the excellent local “Giro” minibus network. Most water parks will offer transportation at reasonable prices with plenty of convenient pick-up points.

The “Strip” located near Oura beach, is the hub of Albufeira’s nightlife scene, famous for its lively entertainment, with many bars, restaurants, and nightclubs open until the early hours of the morning, as well as shops and other activities.

Albufeira offers more than 20 beautiful beaches, from the quaint Fisherman’s beach, the long stretch of sand at Galé to the intimate little coves, rock pools and gentle sands at Castelo, Coelha or São Rafael. All of the beaches are family friendly and most have been awarded with an international Blue Flag award, reassuring the visitor of its safety, water quality and facilities.

A 15 minute drive inland will take you to the charming village of Guia, popular for its chicken piri-piri restaurants, and the Algarve Shopping, a modern shopping centre with an excellent range of shops, cafés and restaurants. You can also enjoy the dolphins, seals and sea lions shows at the nearby ZooMarine ocean park.

For golf lovers, Salgados is the nearest 18 hole golf course, but within a 20-30 minutes drive, you will find some of the best golf courses in Europe, located in Vilamoura to the east, and in Alcantarilha to the west.
